Simone Rede will be Portland’s next auditor.
Even though the election won’t be deemed final and official for many days to come, Rede, the incumbent, ran unopposed for the independent position within City Hall. While write-ins are allowed in Portland’s new ranked choice voting system, it’s all but mathematically impossible for anyone to beat her.
As of Tuesday’s first round of ballot counting, her closest competitor doesn't exist. Rede has 99% of the vote.
Rede formerly served as a performance auditor for the state of Oregon and the regional government known as Metro. She also has served on the audit committee for the Oregon Department of Corrections.
She attended Grant High School, obtained a bachelor’s degree at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, and a master’s degree in public policy and management from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
There’s an old adage that birds of a feather flock together: In her campaign, Rede obtained the endorsement of former city, county and state auditors Gary Blackmer and Suzanne Flynn, and current auditors Jennifer McGuirk of Multnomah County and Brian Evans of Metro.
