Simone Rede was leading Portland’s city auditor race tonight. She ran for reelection unopposed. Voter-approved changes to the city’s government require the elected city auditor and half of the new city council to serve initial two-year terms. Rede has spent over a decade as a government performance auditor with experience working as an auditor at both the Oregon Secretary of State’s Office and the regional government Metro.
“My leadership in this role demonstrates Portlanders trust me to do this important job well,” Rede said. “I’m excited to continue bringing transparency and accountability to city spending and programs as Portland’s government undergoes historic changes.”
Under Rede’s leadership, the auditor’s office reached its first labor agreement with AFSCME and conducted the first city audit of the Joint Office of Homeless Services shelter system. Rede has also released audit reports highlighting mismanagement and waste in the Portland Housing Bureau, Portland Fire & Rescue’s Community Health Division, and the Portland Bureau of Transportation.
Rede won the first contested race for city auditor in 36 years with 80 percent of the vote in May 2022. She became the first person of color and the first openly LGBTQ+ person to hold the city’s elected, independent watchdog position when she took office in January 2023. She identifies as a Latina lesbian.
